Chapter 11: Amber

When the two brothers disappeared up the stairs, the women tried to hold back their laughter.

“Men,” Janie sighed. “They never notice when they’re dirty.”

Coral’s smile was sweet and straightforward. “I thought they were fine. That’s what I like about this place. Nothing about it is prissy. I’ve had enough of people who care only about how they look and how many expensive possessions they have.”

Amber flashed a grin at her. “That’s for sure, growing up with our parents. I knew you’d like South Pines. I’m actually...well, I’m thinking about staying. Permanently.” She had been worried that the words would be difficult to say, but it turned out to be the easiest sentence she’d ever uttered.

Janie parted her lips as if she was about to say something, then she stopped.

Coral didn’t notice, though, because she was watching her older sister intently. “Really? Is it that serious with Mike already?”

Amber blushed. “You can tell? I purposely didn’t even tell you that I was seeing him. I wanted to say it once I got you here in person. You know, I might not be the best judge of character, after Gary.”

Coral shook her head emphatically. “I’d say that you’d be a great judge after all that.” Her jaw clenched for a moment. “If I’d only known what was happening, I’d have…” She sighed. “Well, I don’t know what I would have done. I know our parents wanted you to be with him, because he’s a doctor. And it did make it easier for you to live with him while you were in grad school.” Then a spark of anger lit her eyes. “No, I take that back. I can’t believe I said that. Nothing is worth that. Nothing at all.”

Amber met her sister’s eyes, her own holding back glistening tears. “No. I wish I’d told you about Gary’s violence sooner. I finally did, though, because I knew it would make you come out here, though, and that was what I needed.”

“Damn straight,” Coral agreed. “I’ll be done with veterinary school soon, and then I can visit you more. The West Coast turned out to be a little too far from you, I think.” She smiled in real pleasure at her sister. “And yes, I could see right away that there’s something between you and Mike. The way you two went off together the minute he got here, for example; that was kind of a hint.” Her tone was teasing, but the light in her eyes told her sister that she approved of the match.

“Well, now I’ll be here, so you won’t be too far away even while you finish veterinary school. I’m going to settle down here with Mike.” Amber found that as she said it again, she was sure she meant it.

Janie sounded hesitant. “For real? Have you and Mike discussed everything you might need to talk about before you make such a big decision?”

Amber felt her eyes open wide at what sounded like doubt from her friend. She’d thought that Janie liked her.
